项目摘要

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The specific concept that will be measured is that an educational intervention that includes a hands-on demonstration and return demonstration of a new psychomotor skill (correct car seat installation) will be more effective in helping a parent retain the learning than an educational session that does not include the hands-on component. The hypothesis to be tested is: given a standardized education program, which includes a hands-on component, a parent will exhibit proper installation and use of a child passenger restraint in a vehicle. This study will provide data about the effect of the intervention at a single point in time. The knowledge obtained from this study will be useful for developing effective child passenger safety education programs, and in supporting requests for funding for these programs. More parents receiving effective education will result in more children being properly restrained. This will lead to less children being seriously injured and killed in motor vehicle crashes. It will provide evidence to support the cost effectiveness of preventive health care. This will have a direct impact on reducing the number of children killed and seriously injured on our highways, and will lead to improved quality of life for children and their families. Study received final institutional IRB approval in November, 2003. Clinical support from CRC has not been available since then, and arrangements to replace that support are being made. These include using an undergraduate nursing student for help in recruitment of participants and providing the didactic portion of the educational intervention, and finding space for storage of the car seats and provision of the education. Targeted start time for recruitment of participants is April 2004, with the interventions commencing May or June.
