This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. During this past year the RCMI-Clinical Research Center successfully offered the NIH-sponsored course ¿Principles and Practice of Clinical Research¿, with a record enrollment of 63 individuals, comprising faculty members, students and members of the community at large. This course has become an integral part of the training resources at the UPR-Medical Sciences Campus for those interested in developing or further enhancing their clinical skills. In addition to this course, the RCMI-CRC partially sponsored a 2-day seminar titled ¿ Modern Methods for Clinical Trials¿, with faculty members from the department of Biostatistics and Applied Mathematics at the MD Anderson Cancer Center and the University of Texas. Dr. Peter Thall, Dr. Guosheng Yin and Mr. Mark Munsell discussed various critical topics including clinical trial design, Bayesian Concepts and randomization, providing a unique opportunity of the CRC investigators to enhance their knowledge and skills in clinical trials design and analysis. As part of our visiting scientist program, Dr. William Kennedy, Professor of Neurology at the University of Minnesota, visited the NeuroAIDS research program with partial support from the RCMI-CRC faculty development component. Dr. Kennedy gave a lecture in the assessment of cutaneous innervation as a method to study small fiber neuropathies and has been collaborating in establishing the methododology for the application of confocal microscopy techniques in the cutaneous innervation laboratory.
