This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. THE ADMINISTRATIVE CORE WILL PROVIDE THE LOGISTICAL SUPPORT FOR THE NETWORK. The MS-INBRE Administrative Core started the second year of the project by developing, finalizing and submitting the subcontracts to the PUI campuses for approval. The subcontracts for our two off campus facilities were also submitted and approved during the month of August. Our first EAC meeting was scheduled for Sept. 23 and 24. However, on August 29 Hurricane Katrina struck the Mississippi Gulf Coast, resulting in the need to reschedule. Fortunately, neither the lead institution nor the PUI campuses sustained critical damage during the storm. As a result of the displaced people all local hotels were completely filled, so our EAC meeting had to be rescheduled for January 13 and 14. In early November the MFGN sponsored 3 REO (Research Experience Opportunity) students from year one to the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS). These three students presented their research results to a national audience. On December 16 the Administrative Core held a PUI update meeting. All MFGN PUI investigators presented their work from August 1 to present. This meeting was very successful and gave the PUI investigators an insight as to how the EAC might evaluate their work. The EAC meeting was held on January 13 and 14 in Hattiesburg. All of the EAC members were present except for Martha Cyert who had a previous commitment. The minutes to this meeting have been submitted. In February the Administrative Core began advertising for the REO program. This highly successful program puts students from smaller institutions into some of the best biomedical labs in Mississippi for an intensive twelve week research experience. Application will be received March 15, 2006, reviewed late March and the successful candidates will be notified in late April. The REO program will start mid-May and go through the summer, ending in mid-August.
