This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. WAVE is an extensible interactive graphical environment for manipulating sets of digitized signals with optional annotations. WAVE is the primary tool for viewing waveform data from PhysioNet databases. WAVE's capabilities include: (1) fast display of waveforms and annotations at various calibrated scales; (2) fast access to any portion of a recording, with caching and `read-ahead' heuristics to improve efficiency and reduce network traffic; (3) forward and backward searches for annotation patterns; (4) graphical annotation editing using standard or user-defined annotations; (5) variable-speed superimposition display; (6) high-resolution printing of user-selected signal segments; (7) extremely flexible control of external signal-processing and analysis; (8) 'remote' mode, allowing external programs such as Web browsers to control WAVE's display; (9) synchronization of multiple WAVE processes (on the same or different computers) to provide multiple views of data at varying scales and for telemedicine applications and collaborative, widely distributed visual data analysis; and (10) on-line `spot' help for all controls, with additional topic-oriented on-line help. The original implementation of WAVE for Unix, using the XView GUI toolkit, was first released in 1990; this version remains in continuous development and use.
