英文摘要
The administration of the Center Core will be distributed into three parts: Administrative Core, Imaging
Cores, and a Steering Committee. The Administrative Core will be managed by a Core Advisor who will be
assisted by an administrative staff (see Chart on next page). The Core Advisor (22% effort) will be in charge
of equipment purchases and negotiating prices with vendors (especially where multiple purchases may enable
price reductions), managing the administrative staff, maintaining an inventory of core equipment and
supplies, scheduling regular meetings of the Steering Committee, and serving as liaison between the Steering
Committee and the Core Directors. He will also be responsible for overseeing the system improvement projects,
coordinating activities with our corporate partner and consultants, and organizing and completing the
annual reports to NIH.
Dr. Hockberger, Director of the 2P Imaging Cores in Physiology and consultant on the 2P cores in Pediatrics
and Neurology, has agreed to serve as the Core Advisor. He has been active in the field of optical physiology
for 25 years, and he has made seminal contributions related to dendritic Ca2+ signaling, the role of differential
adhesion in neuronal migration and pathfinding, and the sources and remedies of phototoxicity during live
cell microscopy. He has been responsible for developing imaging resources (including CCD-based and 2P
imaging) at NU, Loyola University (Chicago), University of Erlangen (Germany), and the University of Bonn
(Germany). He has been an active participant in the International Society for Optical Engineers (SPIE) for the
past 12 yrs, and he has been an invited speaker at numerous national and international symposia. At NU, he
has taken a leading role in the education of graduate students and postdocs on the quantitative aspects of
biological imaging. Since 1992, he has directed a graduate course (IGP 415: Biological Imaging: Principles and
Applications) that teaches the theory and practice of quantitative image analysis in the life sciences.
Each imaging core will be managed by a Core Director. We have identified appropriate faculty who have
agreed to serve as Core Directors (see Chart), and their effort (5%) will be contributed by their respective departments.
Directors will be responsible for oversight of the core, advising users on policies within the core,
and keeping track of core usage. Each Director will have technical support to assist in running the day to day
activities of the core (see Technical support, below).
Oversight of the Center Core will be the responsibility of a Steering Committee comprised of the PI,
senior faculty representing the various departments involved in this proposal, and the Core Advisor
(ex officio). Dr. Surmeier (PI) has been the driving force behind the creation of the 2P imaging cores in
