ALVEOLAR MACROPHAGE PROTEOMICS IN HIV-ASSOCIATED EMPHYSEMA

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. HIV-seropositive smokers are predisposed to develop pulmonary emphysema. In order to gain better insight into HIV-emphysema the current proposal seeks to address two specific aims: Specific Aim 1. To delineate the natural history and relevant physiologic mechanisms relevant to HIV-associated emphysema in the HAART era. In this aim we will re-examine a cohort of HIV-seropositive subjects who have had detailed assessment of lung function and computed tomography ~10 years earlier. Specific Aim 2. In this aim we will compare the proteomes of alveolar macrophages obtained from HIV-seropositive smokers who are developing emphysema with HIV-seropositive smokers without emphysema. Successful completion of this project will enable us to better delineate the importance of smoking related lung damage occurring in the HIV-seropositive population. Furthermore, the research proposed in this proposal will provide a unique opportunity to delineate relevant mechanisms underlying the progression of early emphysema.
