This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
Behavioral inhibition, a component of anxiety, is an important trait in humans. However, relatively few studies have examined how this trait relates to social/environmental factors. In this study, we examine the relationship between behavioral inhibition/anxiety and dominance status in young (approximately 3-4 months of age) rhesus macaques living in a semi-natural environment. Daily observations are taken and scored for behaviors indicative of dominance, including overt aggression, threat behavior, displacement and affiliative behavior such as grooming. Since dominance is passed down from a mother to her infants, the dominance status of the infants is estimated by the dominance status of their mothers. We assess behavioral inhibition in the infants as part of a different project (Genetics of Anxious/Depressive Behaviors in Macaques). We are currently correlating these dominance data and behavioral data to determine whether dominance is correlated with behavioral traits.
