英文摘要
This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
Vermont Genetics Network Bioinformatics Core (BC) Highlights
For each of the three BC Aims we reprint the aim and then summarize highlights.
AIM 1 Provide bioinformatics services that make investigators more competitive for research funding. Services include experimental design as well as data management and analysis. These services will include support for experimental programs involving oligonucleotide microarrays, LC-Mass spectrometry, and protein structure/function. More generally, the BC supports development of custom databases.
The Bioinformatics Core is helping to develop the workflow and capacity of the Proteomics Facility. We are using the highly successful Microarray Facility as a guide for best practices. A dedicated server for proteomics processing has been integrated into the Vermont Advanced Computing Center cluster. This will enable proteomics processing to scale as the need arises. We are in the process of developing a long term backup plan in conjunction with other University efforts in this area.
To aid in the proteomics workflow on online consultation system has been implemented. This system allows research to sign themselves up for an initial consultation with the Proteomics Facility staff and the Bioinformatics Core director before research begins. An online sample submission and tracking system has been developed in conjunction with the Microarray Facility.
The Bioinformatics Core is in the process of hiring for an additional microarray analysis position. The success of the Microarray Facility has attracted an abundance of users, requiring additional personnel.
The Bioinformatics Core has provided consultation on numerous research projects within UVM and at partner colleges.
AIM 2 Provide laboratory/lecture modules to Baccalaureate Institutions (BPI).
Dr. Janet Murray, VGN Outreach coordinator, continues development and delivery of her Bioinformatics and Microarray modules. To aid the management of these modules the Bioinformatics Core provided a new content management system for the Outreach Program.
AIM 3 Support the development of administrative infrastructure for electronic networks.
The Bioinformatics Core has developed a Regional Core Facilities database and online application. This application maintains a backend relational database of core facilities in the northeast. A front end application allows searching and filtering in various ways. Currently 139 core facilities are tracked.
The VGN developed a mailing list of Vermont Experts in Science and Technology, called the ERIS Project. ERIS has been in place for several years. It was used to make 39 statewide announcements during the past year.
As an expansion of this mailing list the Bioinformatics Core has developed a networking website aimed at fostering collaboration among scientists and engineers in the state of Vermont. The Vermont Science, Engineering and Environment Network, vSEEN.org, allows user to publish a profile of their expertise and interests, and articles about their work. This information can be searched by simple keyword. Private contact is made through the website without divulging the email addresses of either party. A variety of tools to aid interaction are available.
