MRI NEAR METALLIC IMPLANTS

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Purpose: Huge magnetic field distortions caused by the presence of metallic implants cause severe displacement artifacts in MR images, rendering MR almost useless in a patient population in need of diagnostic imaging. This project combines many techniques to enable MRI in this patient population. Methods: We have combined view-angle tilting (VAT), an existing method to correct in-plane image distortions with a slice-encoding technique that corrects the through-plane distortions. The technique demands scan times on the order of 10-20 minutes, and we are currently working to reduce this time using parallel imaging and partial k-space acquisitions. We have successfully tested our technique in volunteers with metallic knee and spine implants.
