This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Texas Southern University requires additional faculty to strengthen the existing research environment and to stimulate sustained and competitive research. The purpose of this project is to build on the success of the previous Biomedical Research Faculty Recruitment (BRFR) activity by recruiting new established faculty to support an emerging MS and PhD degree program in biomedical and pharmaceutical sciences. This activity is designed to improve the research infrastructure by increasing the number and quality of biomedical research faculty investigating health issues that disproportionately affect disadvantaged populations. The BRFR&D is consistent with the institution's renewed interest and commitment to increasing both the level of research activity and the number of faculty members engaged in biomedical and behavioral research. The objectives of the BRFR&D period are to: (1) hire two new established PhD faculty members in the biomedical and/or pharmaceutical sciences who will reinforce and broaden the research foci at TSU; (2) strengthen the biomedical and pharmaceutical sciences research capabilities in selected diseases associated with health disparities; (3) increase the number and quality of biomedical and behavioral research faculty members who are conducting basic and clinical research with special emphasis on health issues disproportionately affecting minority populations; (4) create more active and viable users for the increasingly sophisticated research infrastructure; (5) increase the number and quality of proposal submissions, presentations at scientific meetings, and publications in peer-reviewed journals by our research faculty; (6) enrich the research environment and infrastructure at TSU; and (7) establish a mentoring program whereby senior faculty will serve as mentors for junior level faculty members.
