This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Heterosexual transmission accounts for the majority of new cases of HIV-1 infection each year. Recent reports from the World Health Organization estimate that a total of 38 million people are now infected with HIV-1 worldwide; 90% of whom live in developing countries. As of 2003, nearly 50% of all infected individuals were women.
