This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
The GoKinD Study is a collaborative effort between the George Washington University, DC; Joslin Diabetes Center, Boston, MA; and 30 additional sites throughout the United States and Canada to establish a respository of DNA and clinical information from a large number of unrelated patients with type 1 diabetes in order to facilitate studies from a large number of unrelated patients with type 1 diabetes in order to facilitate studies into the genetic basis of diabetic nephropathy. Strong evidence from scientific data and family data exists to support that there is a genetic susceptibility for people to develop kidney disease due to diabetes. Recent developments in genetics have made it possible to search for the genes responsible for this susceptibility. In total, the project will recruit over 4,300 participants. About 2,000 people with type 1 diabetes and about half of that number's parents.
We ask the GCRC to be the clinical site for participants who come to Fairview-University Medical Center. The GCRC would be responsible for nursing time in collecting blood, random urine samples, and physical measures. In addition, minor processing of blood would be needed. All samples would be transported by our research staff.
