英文摘要
This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
The ability to measure energy expenditure/resting metabolic rate (RMR) is essential for proper nutrition counseling and support. The accurate assessment of RMR requires the use of sophisticated methodologies. The current gold standard is indirect calorimetry, involving the use of expensive, heavy equipment, which renders it cumbersome for use in clinical practice. The recent development of smaller, portable devices is aimed at helping health care professionals easily measure RMR. The SenseWear PRO2 Armband (BodyMedia, Pittsburgh, PA) is a wireless, commercially available body monitor device, designed for energy expenditure assessment. It is worn on the upper arm over the triceps muscle. Parameters monitored include heat flux, accelerometer in a double axial plain, skin temperature, and near body temperature. Several studies that compared the effectiveness and efficacy of indirect calorimetry to the new devices in a healthy, normal weight, adult population have shown that the SenseWear Armband (SWA) is reliable. However, it has not yet been determined whether this is true for a morbidly obese population. Due to an increase in subcutaneous fat deposit in obese patients, it is thought that sensor precision is decreased, and therefore RMR measurement is inaccurate. The purpose of this study is to compare simultaneous measurements of RMR with the SWA and gold standard Indirect Calorimetry technique using the metabolic cart, in patients of BMI>40 kg/m^2. It is our objective to determine whether the SWA can be utilized as an effective tool when determining the RMR of morbidly obese patients at the Nutrition and Weight Management Center.
