This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. This project will recruit subjects from parent study: Residual Effects of Intoxication on Student Performance (H-23064). This project s goal is to use neuroimaging data to understand the aftereffects of alcohol intoxication on brain activation and neurochemistry as measured by fast magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS). After a screening interview, subjects will be admitted to the GCRC for two admissions: one with an alcohol dosing and one with a placebo dosing. Subjects will have already gone through the parent study once. Subjects will have a baseline imaging prior to dosing and a imaging the morning after dosing. All imaging will be at the Center for Biomedical Imaging (CBI) at Boston University Medical Center. Six hypotheses will be tested: 1.There will be a negative correlation between the performance time in continuous performance tasks and the amount of area of prefrontal cortex activated during the task as determined by the BOLD data. 2.The greatest increase in the area of the prefrontal cortex activated as measured by increased blood flow will be seen during the post-alcohol imaging session. 3.N-acetyl aspirate (NAA) will be reduced, glutamate will be increased and gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA) will be unchanged when comparing the baseline data to the post-challenge data in the alcohol challenge. 4.Changes in NAA will be positively correlated with self-reports of hangover. 5.Nitric oxide levels will decrease on the morning after alcohol dosing compared to non-alcohol dosing. 6. Cortisol levels will decrease on the morning after alcohol dosing compared to non-alcohol dosing.
