英文摘要
This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
Data suggest that vitamin D deficiency (1) contributes to insulin resistance and (2) affects the regulation of a new phosphate-regulating hormone, FGF-23. We will test if treatment of vitamin D deficiency improves insulin resistance and increases FGF-23. Over 12 weeks, 100 healthy vitamin D deficient subjects will be randomly assigned to calcium 500mg BID and either vitamin D 50,000 IU QWEEK or placebo. If confirmed, these data would (1) argue that treatment of vitamin D deficiency could be used as a strategy for the prevention of diabetes mellitus and (2) add to the understanding of a new and important hormone.
