英文摘要
This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. This study will test the hypothesis that eight weeks of isometric handgrip training will reduce both resting and ambulatory blood pressure in older adults. The investigators also hypothesize that isometric handgrip training-induced decreases in blood pressure will be associated with 1) reduced sympathetic outflow at rest; 2) resetting of baroreflex control of sympathetic outflow to the new lower level of blood pressure; 3) improved microcirculatory and conduit artery vasodilator function; and 4) a shift in the balance between circulating vasoconstrictor and vasodilator substances favoring vasodilation.
