This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
The key objectives of the present study are to gain insight into the mechanisms producing altered responses to exercise and other physical stress in hyperthyroid subjects. Regulation of the sympathetic nervous system, skeletal muscle blood flow and metabolism, and thermoregulatory function during physical stress (thermo skin test, lower body negative pressure, cold pressure test, and progressive handgrip exercise) will be studied as possible mechanisms contributing to the altered response to physical stress. Healthy subjects will receive placebo and oral triiodothyronine (T3) administration to induce hyperthyroidism. Subjects will be examined to determine if responses of sympathetic nervous system, muscle blood flow and metabolism, and thermoregulatory functions are altered by hyperthyroidism.
