This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
The Cultural and Behavioral core assists in the design of studies and elicitation of research priorities for future studies for COBRE II and independent investigator applications. Accomplishments this year include:
A. Working with the Epidemiology and Bioinformatics core to present preliminary results to a participating community. The presentations was made to both the Tribal Council and to the community at large. The presentation team included a Project PI, the field research coordinator, the local village coordinator, and the core's linguistic expert. Dr. Legaspi described the process of creating and disseminating these materials in a manuscript, "Dissemination of research findings: collaboration between Alaska Native villages and the academe." The Journal of American Indian and Alaska Mental Health Research of the National Center of American Indian and Alaska Native Mental Health Research will publish it in their spring or summer issue.
B. We utilized the spring of this year to begin to plan for the next five years by assisting all researchers in thinking through when and how to establish relationships with Yup'ik communities. This involved deciding how to distribute research projects in order to lessen community burden, yet insuring that the work of CANHR II investigators will be integrated with our previous data collection, as well as with Dr. Boyer's R01 project. This will allow us to begin to build a prospective longitudinal database on Yup'ik health status for the region.
