This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. Beam Line 12-2 is a new, in-vacuum undulator based, high-brightness, state-of-the-art macromolecular crystallography beam line that will be particularly optimized for the study of microcrystals, weakly diffracting systems such as membranes and large complexes, and for other demanding scientific projects. It will provide 60% general user access. The beam line was funded by a gift from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation in a collaboration between the California Institute of Technology and SSRL. It makes use of a powerful in-vacuum hybrid undulator source. This 67-period undulator was designed so that a 6.0 mm minimum gap operating on SPEAR3 produces a brightness of ~1018 p/s/mrad2/mm2/0.1%bp at an energy of 12 keV, approaching that of the APS UA undulator. Beam was first delivered on November 28, 2006. Subsequently, the undulator and optics were studied and optimization is currently underway.
