This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. In recent years hyperpolarized helium-3 magnetic resonance imaging (HP 3He MRI) shows promise as an ideal imaging tool for quantitative assessments of pulmonary parameters. This technique can provide lung structure information at both microscopic and macroscopic levels. In this work, we present a method for obtaining a high resolution mapping of the long range diffusion coefficient in the lung. We demonstrate the validity of this method in phantom and animal models.
