项目摘要
This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
The purpose of the overall NIH grant is to investigate the characteristics and mechanisms underlying the sex differences in echocardiogram (ECG) characteristics and vulnerability to arrhythmias. The overall hypothesis is that sex differences in myocardial repolarization are both heart rate and autonomic tone dependent, are due to effects of sex hormones, and alter the propensity to clinical arrhythmias in the presence of structural heart diseases.
Aim 1: Sex, repolarization and ST height: This aim will test the hypothesis that a major determinant of ST height is the level of sex hormones by examining the relationship between ST height and sex hormone levels in a mixed population without heart disease. We will also seek to determine whether exaggerated ST elevation is a continuum in normal male physiology or is a distinct clinical syndrome.
In this project, we hypothesize that the level of sex hormones is a major determinant of ST height. The rationale supporting this study is that there are important sex differences in susceptibility to certain arrhtyhmias (irregular heartbeats), suggesting the existence of fundamental electrophysiologic distinctions between males and females. To test our hypothesis, we will examine the relationship between ST height and sex hormone levels in a mixed population (young and old men and women) without heart disease.
