英文摘要
This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
The University of Iowa has been designated a Huntington's Disease (HD) Center for Excellence by the Huntington's Disease Society of America (HDSA). HDSA Centers of Excellence for Family Services and Research are medical facilities that have been recognized by HDSA as having expertise in Huntington's disease. HDSA Centers provide a multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of this complex, relentlessly progressive disease. Services include, but are not limited to, neurology, psychiatry, speech, physical and occupational therapys, genetic counseling and genetic testing as well as social work and regional referrals. The success of HDSA's Centers of Excellence program has been unparalleled. The Huntington's Disease Center of Excellence is the newest model for enhancing clinical research, formed to conduct basic and clinical research in a coordinated manner. A centralized location for Center activities is critical in making this coordination possible. Combining medical services with research opportunities serves as an efficient approach to this complex disease, for which no effective treatment currently exists. As the Centers develop it is expected that an increase in the number of clinical trials will follow, enhancing efforts at finding ways to slow down disease progression, and ultimately finding a cure.
