ALZHEIMER'S IMMUNOTHERAPY IN A PRIMATE MODEL OF CEREBRAL AMYLOID ANGIOPATHY

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. A¿-immunization is a promising new therapy for Alzheimer's disease, but safety issues need to be resolved. This project is investigating the effects of A¿-immunization in the squirrel monkey, a species that develops significant vascular ¿-amyloidosis with age. During the reporting period, we showed that short-term immunization of older squirrel monkeys against the A¿ protein, which is critical to the development of Alzheimer's disease, is safe and is able to induce significant antibody formation. Long term immunization of additional monkeys is in progress. We have shown antibody production in one of 2 immunized aged monkeys, as well as evidence of immunogen-activated plasma B-cells (in collaboration with the Immunology Core).
