MITOCHONDRIAL FUNCTION IN PEDIATRIC OBESITY

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The study will investigate mitochondrial function as a non-invasive predictive marker for the development of insulin resistance in children. Study will evaluate baseline mitochondrial function in obese children compared to non-obese children to: A. Determine whether children with pediatric obesity have impaired mitochondrial function compared to healthy non-obese children. B. Examine the relationship between mitochondrial function and insulin resistance in obese and non-obese children C. Determine the impact of pubertal stage on mitochondrial function in obese and non-obese children. The study will determine in a longitudinal cohort study the timing and relationship of mitochondrial dysfunction to the development of insulin resistance in prepubertal/early pubertal obese children compared to prepubertal non-obese children.
