英文摘要
This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
The purpose of this study is to determine if rosiglitazone, an 'insulin sensitizer', will favorably alter fat cell proteins in people with the metabolic syndrome. The metabolic syndrome is a collection of health risks that increase a person's chance for the future development of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Because the metabolic syndrome is increasing at alarming rates in the United States, identification of alternative ways to alter disease progression in this population is essential.
Rosiglitazone may be helpful in altering the amount of proteins made by the fat cells. This may improve the body's ability to use insulin and impact some of the parts of the metabolic syndrome. Currently, use of medications, like rosiglitazone, is not standard of care in people who have the metabolic syndrome. Our study is an early step to see if rosiglitazone will be beneficial in people who have the metabolic syndrome.
