This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
The main purpose of this study is to see if it is safe to stop using daily inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) therapy in children who are under good asthma control using inhaled corticosteroids. Another purpose of the study is to see if using both albuterol and inhaled corticosteroids whenever rescue medicine is needed will provide better protection against asthma attacks than using albuterol alone.
A third purpose of the research study is to see what individual characteristics like age, gender, family history of asthma and allergies, the degree of allergy, and genetics, may be linked with either a good or poor response to each of the medications. Your blood sample will be tested for chemical and cellular properties related to your respiratory system, allergies, and asthma medications. In addition, a genetic analysis will be performed on your blood. Your biological parent will be asked to sign a separate consent if they agree to participate in the genetics portion of this study. These findings may help investigators to understand possible links between certain genes and how children respond to the study medications.
