BARRIERS TO VOLUNTARY ASSENT IN ASTHMA YOUTH RESEARCH GRANT

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. This project proposes two separate studies to be run sequentially that together will advance our understanding of factors that influence assent in both school-age children and adolescents. Study 1 examines adolescent assent in the context of actual pediatric asthma clinical trial using a "piggy back" design. We will compare an "assent as usual" intervention to an "autonomy enhanced" assent intervention that emphasizes adolescent participation in the decision-making process. We will further examine whether the autonomy enchanced assent intervention results in increase perception of voluntary participation by the adolescent, and greater adherence to the clinical protocol. The clinical protocol is being run independently the UNM CARE research center. "Pretreatment with Albuterol vs. Montelukast in Exercise Induced Bronchospasm in Children." Study 2 expands our research program on barriers to voluntary assent down to elementary school-aged children. Using a hypothetical research protocol, we will examine baseline parent attitudes and educational intervention about research assent for parents, on parent awaremess of their child's views, willingness of parents to refuse participation in the trial based on a child's dissent, and the child's understanding of the research protocol.
