BARRIER TO VOLUNTARY ASSENT IN ASTHMA YOUTH RESEARCH PROJECT

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Study 1 proposes to examine ADOLESCENT ASSENT in the context of an actual pediatric asthma clinical trial. We will compare an "assent as usual" intervention to an "autonomy enhanced assent intervention that emphasizes adolescent participation in the decision-making process. We will further examine whether the autonomy enhanced assent intervention results in increased perception voluntary participation and greater adherence to the clinical protocol.
