This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
Stomach contractions are the consequence of gastric myoelectric activity (GMA). EGG detects the GMA noninvasively by skin surface electrodes. The specific aim of this study is to demonstrate that the GMA detected by multichannel EGG is different in symptomatic preterm and term infants with difficulty in advancing feedings or gastroesophageal reflux (GER) compared to those infants without symptoms. It is possible that these preterm and term infants have abnormal stomach contractions that may explain their symptoms, which are common in the preterm infant and have an associated profound morbidity.
