This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
This multi-center NIH-sponsored longitudinal observational study is an additional study to the Chronic Renal Insufficiency Cohort (CRIC) study (IRB # 2001-0779) designed to examine vascular stiffness in patients with chronic kidney disease. Based on the CRIC population, subjects will be ethnically and racially diverse and between the ages of 21-74 with mild to moderate chronic kidney disease. During the usual CRIC study visit, additional non-invasive procedures will be done to measure aortic pulse wave velocity and central augmentation index. Blood pressure is measured after 5 minutes rest and three ECG leads are placed on the skin. Carotid (neck artery) pulse is localized and distance from carotid pulse to sternal notch (top of breast bone) is measured. The Atcor PVX device measures pulse wave velocity by obtaining 20 seconds of wave form information using an instrument over the skin near the carotid pulse. Subsequently, the right femoral (groin artery) pulse is localized and distance measured from femoral to navel to sternal notch. Using the same device, the pulse wave velocity is measured at the femoral pulse.
The central augmentation index is measured by localizing the right radial (wrist) artery pulse and obtaining ten seconds of wave form information. Approximately 20 minutes are required to obtain all measurements. Subjects will have aortic pulse wave velocity and central augmentation index measured at baseline or year 1 CRIC visit and every other year until 2009.
All information, without personal identification, is transferred to University of Pennsylvania on a web-based password-secured and encrypted system to the data coordinating center for data analysis.
