This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
This study is being done to determine effectiveness of Periocline Gel when used in combination with mechanical treatment of gum disease. Mechanical treatment of gum disease includes deep cleaning (scaling and root planing). Periocline Gel has the active ingredient of an antibiotic (Minocyclie). Minocycline is a member of the tetracycline class of antibiotics, and has been proven to be safe and effective against microbes.
40 adults with gum disease, of general good health and no allergy to Minocycline, will be enrolled to participate in this study. There will be 3 groups studied.
Group 1: This group will receive deep cleaning and sham treatment. Sham treatment consists of an injection where no agent will be used.
Group 2: This group will receive deep cleaning and active drug (Minocycline).
Group 3: This group will receive deep cleaning and placebo, an agent that looks like the active drug but contains no active ingredients.
All subjects will be provided the scaling and root planing at baseline. All subjects will receive sham, placebo, or periocline treatment at baseline, weeks 2 and 4, and months 3 and 6. Study completion will be at 9 months.'
