The Host Defense Group of the Laboratory of Respiratory Biology, Division of Intramural Research, National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, headed by Michael B. Fessler, MD now enters its 14th year at the NIEHS. Publications since the last annual report include:
1. a collaborative review article on macrophage innate immunity in chronic kidney disease
2. a collaborative report on the role of the protein Solute Carrier Family 37 Member 2 (SCL37A2) in macrophage inflammation and cellular metabolism
3. a senior-author publication on the role of the enzyme cholesterol 25-hydroxylase in resolution of lung inflammation
4. an invited editorial on the role of microRNA-33 in antiviral host defense
5. a collaborative report on the validity of questionnaire-based definitions for chronic obstructive lung disease
6. a collaborative report on the role of innate immune receptor TLR5 in environment-induced lung injury
7. a collaborative report on the role of autophagy in macrophages in atherosclerosis in mice
8. a collaborative report describing the association of bisphenol A substitutes (bisphenols F and S) with asthma and hay fever in humans
9. a senior author report describing the effect of rosuvastatin on the immune system of volunteers who have normal serum cholesterol
10. a senior author publication describing a novel role for Epithelial Membrane Protein 2 in the control of neutrophil entry into the infected lung.
Additional accomplishments since our last report include Dr. Fesslers receipt of the NIH Directors Challenge Innovation Award for his proposal to create a Trans-NIH Metabolomics and Lipidomics Consortium to coordinate and advance intramural metabolomics studies. Dr. Fessler was also appointed member of the Vermont Lung Center External Advisory Program and attended a virtual retreat of the VLC earlier this summer to provide them with expert feedback on their research program. Dr. Fessler has continued his work as Associate Editor for the American Journal of Respiratory Cell and Molecular Biology. Dr. Fessler and his trainees presented their research findings, in the form of oral presentations and posters, at several meetings over the past year. In addition, two of Dr. Fesslers postdoctoral fellows, Drs. Wan-Chi Lin and Prashant Rai, received NIH Fellows Awards for Research Excellence.
