We identified disadvantage is the primary concern in the current practice of describing health disparities by numerous socially meaningful characteristics and their intersectionality. We set a plan to: (1) address this concern directly through a conceptual analysis that involves examining what disadvantage means and why we should be concerned about it; (2) develop empirical methods that will entail determining how best to measure disadvantage using an existing, large population-level health survey; and (3) examine types of social groups and their implications for how we describe and measure health disparities.
