The National Drug Abuse Treatment Clinical Trials Network (CTN), funded by NIDA, was first established in 1999 to bridge the gap between research and practice to improve treatment of substance use disorders. The CTN is a means by which medical and specialty treatment providers, treatment researchers, participating patients, and NIDA can partner to cooperatively develop, validate, refine, and deliver new substance use disorder treatment options to patients. This partnership enables the conduct of behavioral, pharmacological, and integrated behavioral / pharmacological treatment interventions in rigorous, multi-site clinical trials to determine treatment effectiveness across a broad range of community-based treatment settings and diverse patient populations. This partnership also aids in the transfer of research results to physicians, clinicians, providers, and patients, supporting NIDA’s ultimate goal of enhancing the delivery of scientifically based treatments to individuals struggling with substance use disorder. Clinical investigators affiliated with the CTN propose ideas for clinical research studies and, if selected, the study is developed and conducted using the CTN platform. The Clinical Trials Network (CTN) is a collaborative framework of grant-funded nodes, a contracted Clinical Coordinating Center, a contracted Data and Statistics Center, and a contracted Logistics Support Center. Since 2005, the Emmes Company has been contracted as the Clinical Coordinating Center for the NIDA CTN.
