项目摘要

We are requesting an urgent upgrade to our coating instrument for the preparation of samples to be analysed using our Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FE-SEM), recently purchased by McMaster University.  This tool is an essential component in the preparation of samples from an extremely broad range applications in biomaterials, polymers, semiconductors and insulators so as to provide images of the highest quality without the artifacts generated by the current coater, which produces coating layers that are inadequate for the high resolution FE-SEM. The areas of applications cover energy-related materials, biomaterial composites, polymer nanoparticles and microcapsules, optoelectronic materials and ferroelectric materials. Overall, the instrument required will be used by numerous students (including undergraduate and graduate students), postdoctoral fellows and researchers.  It is expected that approximately 50 users of the FE-SEM will benefit from this instrument and will obtain reliable structural information on the samples they have synthesized. This instrument will be located at the Brockhouse Institute for Materials Research in the new Canadian Centre for Electron Microscopy at McMaster University.
