Research on texture of materials is the principle focus of Textures and Microstructures Laboratory at McGill. Our laboratory is considered a leading world center in texture research. It was funded 20 years ago from the contribution of NSERC and Steel Company Dofasco and trained of about 40 PhD's and several master's students, under supervision of Prof. J. J. Jonas and the applicant. The strong active research is at best illustrated by more than 400 research papers that were published by Prof. Szpunar group during past 18 years. The laboratory equipment was extensively used by students and researchers of our department and other university users it is at present obsolete and the manufactures informed us that they cannot repair and support it. Research progress in our laboratory and other users is hindered because of the non functionality of the X-ray equipment, which is required for realization of all our on-going research programs. A new X-ray diffraction system is an essential and expeditious need for the realization of ongoing research projects. Professors that use this equipment (ten users) contribute $61,000 toward this purchase and the Department of Metals and Materials Engineering, Dean of Engineering and VP-Research McGill contribute $42,000.
