Automated weather station network

Many aspects of water resources are influenced by weather conditions and their influences on heat exchange, including snow melt, glacier melt and retreat, and river temperature. Particularly in mountainous regions, there is growing concern about future climatic variability and change and its influences on water resources. To understand the effects of future climatic variability and change, there is a need for weather data that can be used to predict heat exchanges. However, especially in mountainous regions, there are few weather stations that can provide the required data.  This proposal requests funds to support the installation of an automated weather station network in the southern Coast Mountains. The data will be used to assist in developing approaches for predicting the spatial variability of weather conditions, particularly over snow and glacier surfaces, and how they can be estimated from the existing network of weather stations.
