High speed centrifuge

A high speed centrifuge is an essential piece of equipment for researchers in biochemistry.  This instrument is used to harvest cells, sub cellular fractionation and for several of the steps involved in the purification of proteins, enzymes and nucleic acids.  It would be impossible to perform most of our experiments without this apparatus since the main focus of our work is on the fundamental properties of proteins, enzymes and nucleic acids.  We presently have two working centrifuges and a crippled 25 year old centrifuge that are shared by seven different research groups and serve over 60 scientists.  The available centrifuges include a 2 year old Beckman Avanti JE, 12 years old a Beckman Avanti J25I centrifuge and a Beckman J2-21 centrifuge that is over 25 years old.  The two Avanti centrifuges are the only ones capable of performing the tasks needed by our researchers.  We have maintained the older Beckman centrifuge due to the high demand for this type of equipment in our department.  Unfortunately the old Beckman J2-21 is no longer capable of exceeding 6,000 RPM and has recently needed expensive repairs.  Since these centrifuges usually perform for up to twenty years, our request for funding should provide seven research groups with an essential piece of shared equipment for several years to come.  Without this new centrifuge, considerable delays in the research programs of these researchers will result in significant and costly delays in their investigations.
