The main objective of immersive 3D environments is to use a computer-generated "world" to give the impression to its users that they "exist" in this virtual location, when in reality they are not, to the extent that they can interact with each other and also with shared objects, if it's a collaborative environment, as they do in the real world. Although, computer-generated worlds in general have been a subject of interest for many years, immersive collaborative environments have been identified by the Multimedia community as one of three "grand challenges" for the next decades. This is a very important and exciting area of research, especially for Canada where the human population is distributed over great distances. Advances in computing and communications have reached a level where we are now pushing the envelope to eliminate the distance barrier between people for all human senses including the sense of touch, and not just for audio and video, in order to virtually transport people to other locations. This immersive tele-presence research will lead to many novel applications and systems that will fundamentally impact society and the manner in which it conducts business and/or daily life. The ability to be "present" in a remote location will totally shake up current thinking in terms of how people, governments, and corporations do things, and will lead to the advancement of science and technology and contribute towards higher quality welfare of the society.
