Whole genome sequence data continue to grow in an exponential pace with advances of technology and savvy. The wealth of genome sequence data already caused a revolution in molecular evolution methods. With the increasing amount of whole genome information it becomes possible to analyze genome-scale differences between organisms, and to identify the evolutionary forces responsible for these changes. I am interested in algorithmic and statistical problems in genomics. The objective of this research project is to develop new techniques and improve existing ones in genomics, at all stages ranging from sequence collection through sequence comparisons to phylogenetic studies. Besides a significantly reduced cost for the comparative analysis of mammalian genomes, genome sequencing methods developed within this project will allow for a detailed genome-wide study of human chromosomal aberrations associated with human genomic diseases and cancer. Other components of the project relate to the genome organization of early living organisms, such as the gene structure of the earlist eukaryotes and the constitution of the last common ancestor of all extant organisms.
