Bioinformatics for comparative and evolutionary genomics

The proposed research project focuses on computational method development in genomics. The main biological questions adressed by the methods revolve around the interplay between evolutionary processes acting on different functional and non-functional elements. I will in particular focus on the evolution of homolog gene families and of eukaryotic gene structure. The project aims to develop novel computational methods to study the gain and loss of spliceosomal introns, or the gain and loss of genes. Relying on sophisticated mathematical models of gains and losses in a phylogenetic context, the methods are expected to shed light on selection forces that shaped modern genomes, and to aid in functional gene annotations.
