Aeroelasticity is a multi-disciplinary field in engineering that studies the interaction among aerodynamic, inertia and elastic forces. Aeroelastic phenomena are a potential source of instability problem for aircraft structures. The most important aspect of these phenomena is divergent oscillation of wings known as flutter. Recent investigations have shown that there are a considerable number of potential sources of nonlinear behaviour on modern aircraft, and nonlinearities can significantly influence the aeroelastic characteristics of aircraft structure. The main objective of this research proposal is to seek continued support to carry on research in analysis and prevention of flutter in aircraft structures, and to initiate an aeroelasticity research group in the new Department of Aerospace Engineering at Ryerson University. This will ensure university training of graduate students to meet the demand for expertise in aeroelasticity. During the past several years, the applicant has been studying aeroelastic behaviour of aircraft wings taking into account nonlinearties. Methods of preventing aeroelastic instabilities for such systems have also been investigated. In this research proposal, these investigations will be enhanced and completed. The use of nonlinear signal analysis methods to identify aeroelastic instabilities has also been explored in the past few years of the applicant's NSERC grant. This method gave very encouraging results, and it will be further improved in this research proposal.
