Future economical development and social well-being of our information-based society depend critically onavailability of ubiquitous, broadband, and secure networks. Fiber-optic transmission is the ideal technology torealize such networks to push the bandwidth and accessibility limits for new applications. The emergingfiber-to-the-premise (FTTP) optical access market presents not only an exceptional opportunity but alsosignificant challenges. The major barrier to widespread deployment of optical transmission technologies inaccess applications is the relative high cost of the optoelectronic devices and subsystems. The proposedresearch addresses the need for low-cost and high-performance optical access technologies through innovativedesigns. The research brings together a group of excellent researchers with diversified and complementary expertisewith one clear focus: to conduct leading-edge research towards realizing cheaper, smarter, and betteroptoelectronic devices and subsystems for optical access networks. The research will be on the development ofnew concepts and designs for key optoelectronic devices and subsystems with consideration for interplaysbetween device physics and system performance and balance between performance and cost. The project willleverage on close collaboration with Canadian supporting organizations and international collaborators fordevice fabrication and system applications. The proposed research, if successful, will generate new scientific knowledge and disruptive technology withthe strong potential for applications and commercialization. The technologies can offer significant competitiveadvantages to the Canadian companies with advanced engineering and manufacturing capabilities to competewith the traditional low-cost and labor-intensive players in the global optical access market.
