Intense laser pulses directed on any matter will form a plasma, a gas dominated by its electrons and ions, and the interaction of the laser light with these will have many effects which are to be studied by extensive computer modeling. The chief work is to be done on  coherent harmonic X-ray generation in the form of ultra-short intense spikes separated the driving laser period. These are produced by electrons driven to relativistic speeds by the laser light. Other forms of nonlinear scattering, light conversion to energetic electrons (and maybe ions) are to be looked at as well.
