The applicant will examine the design and analysis of new control architectures with the capacity to self reconfigure. The ability to reconfigure is intended to be available at all times so that machines may reconfigure themselves to improve efficiency or to replace essential capabilities in case of an in service failure. Typical applications of such systems are to modular machine tools, robots, various "fly by wire" systems and automated testing operations. The research is particularly aimed towards the development of low cost solutions. The presence of such systems will greatly increase the range of products over which one may justify the use of redundancy as a means to improve safety and reliability.
