This equipment request is to replace a 17 year old ultra low temperature freezer that is an essential component of our research infrastructure. The new ultra low temperature (-80oC) freezer will also have a carbon dioxide back up system, so that if there is a freezer failure or power cut (there has been two already since we move into our new building!), the temperature will be maintained. Break downs with old freezers are a major concern, as no matter what time of day or night, one has to go to the lab, find another -80oC freezer that has space, and transfer the entire contents of the freezer in order to avoid a catastrophic loss of valuable reagents. The -80oC freezer provides essential storage for important biological research materials and unique scientific samples that we have accumulated over the years. These biological samples need to be kept between -60oC and -80oC for their long-term viability. The biological samples are necessary for the lab to do its research and the longer the lab has been in operation, the more extensive and important the inventory of materials. We have been pursuing our research for 17 years and have collected a unique and irreplaceable collection of research tools, samples and reagents that are also available to the world-wide research community upon request. We need a safe and reliable freezer to store these items. Funding of this critical item will allow the sustainability of our NSERC funded research program that is aimed at understanding the role of CD44 in cell adhesion and migration. This basic research into what makes a cell stop and what makes them go is of fundamental importance in cell biology. Understanding at the molecular level how the cells in your body move and when they stick provides the essential and basic building blocks that will allow for the future development of new biotechnologies designed to facilitate, mimic or prevent cell movement or cell adhesion. By investing in this basic research, Canadians are ensuring the continuation of scientific discovery and progress for future generations.
