This Proposal is for repairing an existing pulsed laser-ablated deposition (PLD) system at the University of Toronto. This PLD system is dedicated to the synthesis of complex-oxide thin films, particularly copper-oxides which exhibit high temperature superconductivity and manganese-oxides which exhibit colossal magnetoresistance.  These films are used in nanoscale cryogenic experiments, to examine the basic physics underlying the electronic properties of these complex-oxide materials, and to seek new phenomena which can be harnessed in novel device applications.   This PLD system is currently six years old, has been very productively used, but is now in serious need of instrument servicing and parts replacement to ensure continuing operation.
