Surface-atmosphere interactions in the Canadian Prairies and Arctic

This research is tailored to surface-atmosphere process work which is critical for better understanding and prediction of our weather and climate system. This includes the polar and mid-latitude regions. The proposed research will focus on specific physical processes and feedbacks that take place between the lower atmosphere and various surfaces such as terrestrial, open water, snow and sea ice. This includes seasonal, daily and hourly influences of each surface on lower atmosphere evolution in association with larger scale atmospheric circulations. This will not only improve the way we simulate our weather and climate system (with computer models), but will also contribute to our basic understanding of polar and mid-latitude meteorology and weather forecasts. Benefits to Canada (besides the above) are to enhance our global contribution and stature in weather and climate sciences.
