Ultra wideband (UWB) is a new and emerging short-range device technology with potential benefits for wireless communications, radars, localization and security applications. UWB communication devices can be used in wirelessly distributed services such as phone, cable, and computer networking throughout a building or a home. UWB has potential in both home and business markets, based on its low cost as well as high-speed data transmissions capability, and could be well suited for various video distribution applications. UWB radars find its application as medical imaging radars and through-wall probing radars. Apart from these applications, UWB technology will find applications in various surveillance applications. The primary objective of this research program is to develop new design guidelines for passive UWB components such as antennas, filters, hybrid couplers, etc. This research also focuses on the development of pulse generators to satisfy different power spectral masks, e.g., the FCC, European and Japanese masks. The intermediate objective of this research program is to study the link budget analysis for UWB through-wall radar and the characterization of materials using UWB radar. The outcome of this research program will be a generic laboratory model (at the module level) of UWB transceiver system to verify various applications ranging from data communications to finding vital activities (heart beat and breathing rate) of a patient.This research will assist the Canadian telecommunication and medical industries to seize competitive advantage in the fast growing market of UWB technology. This research will generate revenues through spin-offs or licensing of technology.
