Wireless sensor network (WSN) is a hot research topic and the number of applications using wireless sensor nodes is increasing very rapidly. It is therefore very important to continue to improve this emerging technology.The main goal of this proposal is to acquire a wireless sensor network testbed, which is composed of several tiny wireless sensing nodes, base stations and processing centers. All the nodes communicate among each other via radio frequencies.This testbed will allow us to tackle the following three main research objectives:1) Introduce new planning algorithms in order to design wireless sensor networks.2) Propose new network protocols to solve problems such as how the information is sent through the network (routing) and how to correlate particular events in space and time (localisation and clock synchronisation).3) Improve the performance of the network by developing new models for processing the information inside the network (data aggregation/fusion).Until now, the only means for evaluating the efficiency of our algorithms have been analytical analysis and simulation. However, there is a huge gap between simulation and real life experiments. The wireless sensor network testbed is a necessary tool that will help us to develop and test new algorithms.
